Stripes are one of my favorite patterns ever! Stripes have so much history tied to them that it’s impossible to deny that they’ve had an important impact on the history of fashion, especially French fashion. Stripes have endured the pressures of time and change and will probably continue to do so indefinitely. Why, you may ask? Stripes can stand on either end of a spectrum between minimalism and excess. A striped pattern can be used in a very simple and subtle way, such as an accent in the hem of a skirt or dress. However, stripes can also be used to excess when many stripes are put together in different ways to make different shapes, or different patterns. Another reason I believe stripes have endured the test of time is the visual flow it creates. This is many people’s main concern with stripes. It is true that thicker horizontal stripes tend to make a person look wider. However, if this is a concern, you can always try vertical stripes (which tend to make you look taller and thinner), or thinner horizontal stripes to accentuate certain areas of the body such as your hips. If used correctly, stripes will create a very effortless visual flow in your outfit. Finally, I believe stripes have stood around this long because they can be used casually or formally. No matter the dress code, stripes can make any outfit look chic and sophisticated in a very simple way!
